Daniel Hall was accepted into Annapolis’ Co-op Program for the Spring-Summer 2021 Term from Virginia Tech as a Computer Engineering major. He quickly began doing meaningful work that helped him determine what direction he wanted his career to take.
“AMS is a small company that punches well above its weight so as a co-op you get to dive into a lot of the same projects that full-time employees might. The co-op program gave me experience in projects across the board. I was able to do everything from adding new features to our APIs and utilities to debugging any issues internally or by customers. I worked with our network switches, a variety of baseboards and mezzanine cards, and our chassis managers.”
In Summer 2022, he returned.
“I had the pleasure of return for a second co-op session, in which I got some more freedom to start new projects, including updating/rewriting portions of our internal testing tools. I loved working with our API – developing drivers for hardware on our systems and collecting everything to create a cohesive product. The breadth of projects available to co-ops at AMS helped me figure out what I enjoy doing and gave me experience with industry tools like Vivado and PetaLinux.”
In January 2023, he was hired as a full-time Associate Software Engineer and jumped right back into important assignments.
“I've focused a lot on our new Agilex lineup including the WSSAF1 [Small Form Factor Module] and WS3AE1 [3U OpenVPX Processor]. This has involved everything from maintaining our versions of the bootloader and kernel we ship for our products, writing drivers and APIs, and writing applications leveraging that API to exercise our product. I also work with our network switch products. Overall, I see parts of everything from new development to product verification/testing to debug. With a small company and team, there's always something fun to do!”
